2017 Ludowici Project of the Year – Commercial Roofing

St. John’s Anglican Church is a Gothic Revival structure designed by one of its members, Architect Joseph J. Patterson.  The buildings that make us the church complex use multi-colored brick with sandstone and cast stone trim. It has been described as one of the most interesting church complexes within the city of Ft. Worth.

The original Mineral Wells shingle tile roof was badly damaged by hail March 17, 2016. Mineral Wells Tile Company is no longer in production; availability is limited to small batches from the salvaged tile market. Samples of the existing tile were removed and sent to Ludowici for profile, finish, and color match. The original tile had a broad range of kiln-flashed colors ranging from buffs to browns to reds, indicative of the clay source and old bee-hive kiln firing process.

Ludowici developed a custom scored shingle tile, 7-1/2” x 15” x ½” to match the original profile of the Mineral Wells shingles in a five-color blend approved by the church vestry after considerable deliberation.
