Ludowici is a registered provider with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Continuing Education System and the Interior Design Continuing Education Council (IDCEC).
We value education and make it a priority to provide continuing education for architects and building designers. Our program includes learning presentations and factory tours available to AIA and IDCEC members.
Ludowici offers three distinct courses that qualify for Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) credits:
THE FUNDAMENTALS OF CLAY ROOF TILE
1.5 Learning Units
This hour and a half program explores the benefits of using terra cotta roof tiles, specifically its green properties and differentiating qualities from alternative roofing materials. The Fundamentals of Clay Roof Tile also explores types of terra cotta roof tiles, installation methods and accessories in various terra cotta tile applications.

THE ART OF TERRA COTTA & COLOR
1.0 Learning Unit
With over 50 designer-friendly colors and the ability to create custom colors, we can match nearly any hue. An overview of terra cotta’s design and color capability, sharing what’s possible, and discussing considerations needed in color conversations and project examples.

Ludowici’s cladding division, Terreal North America, offers a one and a half hour program detailing the science and sustainability of terra cotta rainscreen systems and terra cotta sunscreens.

LUDOWICI FACTORY TOUR
2.0 Learning Units
With a visit to the Ludowici manufacturing facility, you get an up-close, in-depth look into the the production of terra cotta tile – from the raw material grinding process, to extrusion, glazing, firing, packaging, and shipping. You’ll have the opportunity to observe hand molding and customization techniques proprietary to Ludowici.

THE ART OF TERRA COTTA & COLOR

This one hour program explores the art of terra cotta, beginning with a quick overview of the manufacturing process, covering the natural variation in clay tile along with the glazing techniques to achieve the desired color. This course also focuses on the color selection and matching process to custom and historic profiles. The course provides several case studies comparing the original tiles to the new terra cotta replacements.
Learning Objectives
- Communicate the various color opportunities and capabilities through the discussion of standard colors, glazing techniques, custom color development and color by hues.
- Discuss overall expectations with clients regarding color matching for historic and new traditional roofs, natural color variations, color blending and sampling.
- Considering the importance of color on all projects, reviewing the step by step color matching process for both custom and historic projects.
- Review specific case studies in regards to custom color development and historic preservation projects discussing the various techniques and approaches used on each project.
